Is a hard thing to do.
Stephen King calls it “killing your darlings”, and he’s right.
(Well of course he is, he’s Stephen King!)
It’s also known by the horrid term of editing – and anyone who’s ever done it well knows what a painful experience it can be.
You must be ruthless. You must be stern. You must force yourself to cut this little bit right there, and that big ole swath of crap right there.
Move this around, add this, forget that entirely.
And comfort yourself by imagining all those lovely dropped sentences, lost paragraphs, torn out pages, chapters, characters as Still Alive Somewhere.
Just waiting to make their next appearance in another work.
Isn't that a great thought?
